Parks and playgrounds

Hartford has a number of parks and playgrounds. Two are managed by Hartford Parish Council (Grange Park and Leese Park), and others are managed by private companies or by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

Hartford Parish Council also manages the Green Field and the allotments, just behind the Chester Road. There are many benches and fragrant herb beds nearby, so it is a great place to relax – plus there is a set of goalposts for football games.

Marshall’s Arm Local Nature Reserve

Marshall’s Arm Local Nature Reserve is full of wildlife and a lively stream. The beautiful nature reserve is located between Hartford and Greenbank, and runs down to the River Weaver. It can be accessed by car via Stones Manor Lane, Hartford or Saxons Lane, Castle.  There is also access on foot along the River Weaver from the A556. See more about the location.

If you’re interested in helping to maintain the nature reserve, then you can join the ‘Marshalls Army’ volunteers. There are also events and guided nature walks for anyone wanting to learn more about the wildlife.

River Weaver

The Weaver Navigation is 20 miles long, and passes through Hartford. Walking alongside the river, you can see traces of its industrial past when it was used to transport salt, as well as flourishing wildlife and ancient woodland.

On the Canal & River Trust website, you can find out about the Weaver and its walks and angling clubs. There’s also information about the Anderton Boat Lift, a vast restored Victorian structure which hydraulically raises boats 50 feet to the Trent and Mersey Canal. At Anderton, you will find a visitor centre about the history of the lift, plus a playground, maze and country walks.

Thorn Wood

Thorn Wood is a young community woodland planted in 1999. Managed by Woodland Trust, it is located alongside the main road between Weaverham and Hartford. The site can be accessed via a kissing gate entrance off Northwich Road. There is a good network of unsurfaced footpaths and the wood is well used by local dog walkers. There are also areas of wildflower meadows and a pond.

Walking and cycling through nature

On our Walking and cycling page, you can find out about walking and cycling routes in and around the village, that take in the beautiful scenery. You can also find out about organised walks and bike rides for those who want to socialise.
