The Parish council has purchased 50 of these profiles in order to promote the development of Hedgehog highways they will be FREE to residents of Hartford.
Hedgehogs are in decline, we all need to play our part if we are to get the population increasing again. Allowing them to roam and forage for food will play a vital part in their recovery.

Hedgehogs tend ‘to do the rounds’ and visit several gardens within an area. A Hedgehog Highway will enable hedgehogs to easily access a veritable feast in your garden – this would generally consist of beetles, caterpillars, slugs, worms and other creepy crawlies (but never bread and milk which causes stomach problems). Don’t worry, you don’t have to serve the meal up, just let the hogs snuffle around your garden at night and they will help themselves.
You don’t have to have a Hedgehog profile, just create a 13 x 13 cm (5×5″) gap in or under your fence. It might be an idea to see if some of your neighbours would like to join in and create a long highway. It would be good to avoid a highway opening straight onto a main road – for obvious reasons!
If you have a shared fence please agree with your neighbour before you cut the access in the fence.
