Allotments in Hartford

Find out about Hartford’s allotments, where they are located and how to apply for an allotment.

Green Field allotments

Hartford Parish Council owns and manages the Green Field allotments – see red pin on the map below. Located behind the Chester Road shops, the Green Field can be accessed from:

  • Chester Road, just past the terraced cottages opposite Hartford Grange (pedestrian access only)
  • The lane opposite the St John’s Church Lychgate (resident parking only).

There are currently 68 plots of various sizes from 25-180 sqm. The plots are let on an annual basis. The tenancy fee for 2025 is £0.50 per square metre. For the majority of plots, this works out to be much cheaper than gym membership – and you will definitely feel the physical and mental benefits!

Applying for a Green Field allotment

If you would like to understand more about the commitment of taking on a plot, please read our Allotment Policy and Tenancy Agreement. Please note, tenants must reside in the Parish of Hartford as confirmed by Council records and be over the age of 18. Sole or joint tenancies are available. Requests from Community Groups are also welcome.

Hartford Parish Council holds a Waiting List for vacant plots. Effective management of plots has resulted in an average wait time of less than 12 months.

If you are interested in renting a plot, please contact the Clerk and provide the following details: Your name, address, contact number and email address.

Please note – A deposit of £100 is required for those taking on a plot from 1 March 2025. The deposit is refundable if the plot is returned in a cultivated and managed condition without debris/waste. Please speak with the Clerk if you have any issues regarding payment.

Pavilion

At the Pavilion, also on the Green Field, the Plotters’ Hub provides a convenient place for allotment tenants to meet and store shared allotment related items, including relevant magazines. Hub members can also use the kitchen facilities and hot beverages are available free of charge. The Pavilion is accessible – there is an external ramp to the entrances and an accessible toilet inside.

Hartford Allotment Association

Hartford Allotment Association (HAA) Committee is made up of ‘Plotters’ (allotment tenants) and Hartford Parish Council representatives. The Association works closely with Hartford Parish Council on matters relating to the management of the plots but also focuses on preserving, improving, promoting and supporting all things plotting related.

Tenants joining the Association are required to become a member of the National Allotments Society (NAS). Costing £3 per annum or £6 in total for joint tenants, this provides access to affordable third party liability insurance, plus other NAS benefits such as discounts on horticultural products and seeds, a quarterly members’ magazine, initial legal advice and horticultural expertise.

Other allotments

As well as the Green Field allotments, managed by Hartford Parish Council, there are other allotments within Hartford:

  • Beech Hill Allotments – a private allotment site on Beech Road in Hartford. Contact Beech Hill directly if interested
  • Redrow estate (School Lane) and Manor Gardens (Chester Road) estates both have plans for small on-site plots. Further details will be provided soon. In the meantime, residents from both developments are welcome to join the waiting list at any time for a plot on the Green Field allotments.
